Terrifier

This reviewer was introduced to metal during the volcanic phase of heavy music’s geologic shift in the late 80s/early 90s, which gave rise to thrash, death, and various other metal subgenres; so, by this point roughly 25 years later, it takes a lot for any current “young” metal band to leave a lasting impression – yet every minute of last Friday’s lineup at Pat’s Pub was on par with those shows of yore.

From start to finish, each local death metal act on the lineup played its tightest set to date. Relative newcomer Ganglyon, subsequently on hiatus until July (keep an eye out for new side project, Anal Speedbag), opened a Pandora’s Box of crawling sonic chaos which filled every corner of the room with virulent malignity. Cadaveric Lividity followed with a beauteous auditory bouquet of rot and gore and debuted some blistering new material, which the band is scheduled to begin recording shortly for their upcoming full-length release. Assimilation‘s familiar banter still elicits laughter from the crowd but it’s their gift for razor-sharp old school death metal that cuts deep (and their anticipated debut album Apotheosis is due for release next month.) Portland’s Rotting Slab apologized profusely for their country’s embarrassing politics but after an all-too-brief set it’s clear that the band feels no shame for exposing Canadians to their manic brand of necrotic perversion.  More, please!

Switching gears, headlining thrash outfit Terrifier surpassed all hype and expectations surrounding their latest release, Weapons of Thrash Destruction, and detonated a genuinely atomic set of eviscerating technical proficiency, maximum showmanship, and mercilessly excellent tuneage.  It’s unfortunate that more local metalheads don’t show up to fill these budget-friendly weekend shows to capacity because the caliber of talent on display and the quality of the audience experience at these small-club gigs lives up to one’s memories of that golden age of metal in the early 90s, when thrash bands like Razor or Sacrifice were still making a name for themselves at home and abroad. Of all the concerts this reviewer has attended in venues of innumerable shapes and sizes over the years, nothing beats a band playing to the best of their ability for a hometown crowd on a Friday night – and Terrifier clearly knows that, too.
