Right: Canada Day – we’d better get caught up with our June shows, then. See below for photos from a great capital “M” metal show.
Headlined by Iron Kingdom, with support from the sonic marauders of Armstrong known as Odinfist, Vancouver’s own Apprentice, and the adventuring Gatekeeper (which officially hails from Edmonton but seems to have made the rainy city its summer home – lucky us!), the evening’s solid lineup rocked from start to finish.
Gatekeeper’s opening set raised the bar for each of the subsequent acts (and one hopes that, despite having recently completed a cross-country tour, the band will perform again in Vancouver again before long.) Almost a year had passed since we last saw Apprentice on Funky’s stage, but the band has clearly been working hard on some ambitious songwriting – putting a few more shows under their collective belt will make a master of Apprentice – and this reviewer looks forward to the realization of their grand design. Odinfist hit their stride from the first song and slaughtered with many a wide grin as they cleared a path to the metal majesty of Iron Kingdom, another local act we’ve missed over the long seasons since their show with Unleash the Archers at Venue last summer. The quartet always deliver a relentlessly fast-paced set of blistering metal and this show was no exception. \m/
And now, the photos!
