When the smoke cleared and the lights came up Sunday night at The Red Room, there stood The Mountain Man, victorious. Of the three bands (rounded out by Majora and Process) that survived the elimination rounds and had come to perform at Vancouver’s regional finals for Wacken Metal Battle Canada, the judges faced a formidable challenge to choose their ultimate combatant.
Each act came prepared for battle, executing an even stronger set than the previous qualifying round that had earned them one of the three coveted slots on this night’s lineup. Majora opened the show with a tight, well-practiced set, Process reprised their role as the fully-realized veteran act of the show, and The Mountain Man came down from their hideout in the hills once again to make a final, all-or-nothing raid on the lower mainland.
Following the announcement of the winner was a special guest performance by last year’s regional Wacken Metal Battle winner, Medevil. Sunday is a tough night to retain a crowd beyond 10:30 because the transit system shuts down earlier than usual and everyone has to work the next day, so it was a smaller audience that witnessed the live debut of new Medevil material from their upcoming album; nevertheless, the quintet put on a high-calibre performance which suggests the best is yet to come.
Congratulations to The Mountain Man, and to all of the bands who fought so valiantly this year – you are conquerors all!
