High on Fire

Tuesday’s show at The Rickshaw was a blistering riff-fest, from Lucifer’s Gaz Jennings and the dual-guitar attack of Pallbearer (none the less impressive for being short a bassist that evening), through to High on Fire’s non-stop assault courtesy of Matt Pike.

Plenty has been said elsewhere locally about the latter bands’ performances but it is worth noting that UK “magick rock” outfit Lucifer, currently on its first North American tour, drew a strong crowd for an opening act, undoubtedly due to the presence of ex-Cathedral guitar wizard Gaz Jennings and the classic doom-rock allure of vocalist Johanna Sadonis. (And, judging by observation of the crowd, vinyl copies of their debut album were quite popular at the merch table.) 30 minutes was far too short a set for the receptive crowd, particularly given the empty slot available in the absence of Venomous Maximus (presumably held up at the border), and one hopes we will be seeing this band again in the Pacific Northwest before long.
