Vancouver’s final qualifying round of Wacken Metal Battle capped off four weeks of combat with a slaughterhouse of talent from its five competitors. King Coyote’s opening set of sludgy thrash caught the meek Sunday audience by surprise, with vocalist Jordie Zylstra’s swagger-and-snipe manner recalling the stage antics of Jesus Lizard’s David Yow. Elysium Echoes followed suit, whetting the edge of epic progressive metal with a refreshingly clean electric piano sound and the tag-team vocal assault of Yash Trivedi and Katia Villa. The monstrous grooves laid out by Slagduster offered a smooth change of pace before the rapid-fire battery of Among the Betrayed, followed by an incredible set by this round’s ultimate winners, Medevil. Congrats to them!
