With two mammoth shows due to post today we’re short on time for commentary but suffice to say that Diecemberfest delivered countless great performances from a lineup of bands in top form.
In strictly sonic terms, Olde Worlde Nudists and Obsidian stood out by virtue of pristine dynamics and impeccable timing respectively: for the first time one could hear the ‘Nudists’ flute parts with total clarity and recalling the enlightened ecstasy of classic Bardo Pond; and Obsidian’s in-ear monitoring was clearly worth the extra-early setup effort, as their performance surpassed their customary standard of excellence.
Though still regrouping its lineup, BOG performed as an instrumental trio until Santa showed up to briefly fill in on vocals. The members of The Mountain Man continue to impress with their dizzying stage antics and Bushwhacker’s exultant groove is always a highlight and each of the basement stage acts played razor-sharp sets that shredded the enthusiastic crowd (although one was admittedly disappointed that it seemed no sandwiches were on hand for Expain’s set.)
Unfortunately, given the long commute by public transit back to factory HQ in Surrey in winter weather conditions, we missed out on Trollband’s set; but we took a couple of candid shots from sidestage while the band was setting up that close out the show on an appropriately jolly note:
