The inaugural Covenant Festival – a celebration of independent, underground acts in extreme music – occupied three nights at two venues last weekend in Vancouver and featured several artists, beginning with Victoria black metal outfit Harrow at The Hindenburg on Thursday (June 11) and ending with a blistering set from Edmonton’s Rites of Thy Degringolade at The Rickshaw Theatre on Saturday.
Given the festival’s thematic focus and the use of low light at both venues – presumably to enhance the infernal atmospheres – we’ve opted to present a black-and-white gallery (divided in two parts to distinguish opening and closing nights), in the spirit of extremity.
Opening night at The Hindenburg:
(Featuring: Christian Mistress, Spell, Order of the Solar Temple, and Harrow)
Closing night at The Rickshaw Theatre:
(Featuring: Rites of Thy Degringolade, Mitochondrion, Funeral Circle, Deathwinds, Garotting Deep, and The Nausea)
Addendum: Apologies to all the bands from the second event (Friday) of the festival; unfortunately this night conflicted with our coverage of Ministry and we have not yet mastered the art of being in two places at once.
